Rap: Wat?

rap-upxlasonic

Rap has always been a controversial type of music. A variety of people listen to it, but the target audience is obviously the black community. White people that listen to it are considered “wiggers” and are frequently ridiculed for listening to it. Most of the ridicule is warranted however. I’ll be honest; I used to listen to rap. I had, and still have, a Ludacris and Ma$e CD, but have no deep connection with either of the two. I apologize; I was naïve and young and was under the influence of a lot of mescaline. All of my friends scorned me for listening to it, but I never quite understood why. Now I am fully aware.

With recent songs like M.I.M.S’s “This is Why I’m Hot”, I question the sanity of anyone who listens to it. The overused phrase “crap can’t be spelled without rap lol!!!1!” is effective, but there is much more depth to it than what I previously thought. The lyrics to this “gem” are as follows:

“This is why I’m hot, this is why I’m hot,

This is why, this is why, this is why I’m hot,

This is why, this is why, this is why I’m hot,

I’m hot cuz im fly, you ain’t cuz you not,

This is why, this is why, this is why I’m hot.”

With quality reasoning as to why he is fly and I am not, it doesn’t appear that I can ever be nearly as cool as he is. “He is hot because he is fly and I’m not because I’m….not? Whoa! Persuasion in its prime!”

There are very few rappers that I deem remotely musical. T.I. is the sole rapper that I find marginally above juvenile. Yes, he had an album with the song “Tispy” in it, where the grammar was just above George Bush, he redeemed himself with his latest album, “King”. Maybe it’s true that songwriters get better with time, Paul McCartney is a great example, but T.I. has surely swayed a few non-rap listeners. I’m not here to write about how good he is; just that there may be a bleak hope that there may be some rappers with a higher lyrical quality than our pal M.I.M.S.
